How to measure
Measure inside the pan, excluding handles and rims. For sloping sides, enter different top and base dimensions. For straight sides, they are the same.
A worked example
An 8×8-inch square pan, measured inside, holds about 2.098 L to the rim at a depth of 2 inches. A lower batter depth gives a smaller usable volume; enter that depth if you do not want to fill the pan to the rim.
Frequently asked questions
What about a 6-inch or 10-inch cake pan?
Choose inches and enter the inside diameter and depth. Diameter alone cannot tell you the cake pan capacity: a deeper 6-inch pan may hold more than a shallow one. For an 8×8 pan, choose square and enter its inside side length and depth.
Do I need to account for pan height?
Yes. The side height determines the pan’s full capacity and how much room there is for the batter to rise. If you need to compare two pans or keep a particular batter depth, use Pan Converter with the actual inside dimensions.
How full should I fill a cake pan?
How full to fill a cake pan depends on the recipe and rise. Fractions here refer to height, not volume. Do not fill to the rim just because that capacity is shown; use the recipe’s guidance and check the estimate for your bake.
Can I mix inches and centimetres?
Yes. Choose Metric or US as a default, then choose cm, mm or in once per pan card. The original and target pans may use different units; changing the unit preserves their physical size.
Can I use a pan with a centre tube?
Centre tubes, fluting and irregular outlines are not modelled. Measure actual capacity or use a method appropriate to that shape; do not treat an ordinary circle as a tube pan.
